If you are interested in becoming involved as a mentor, submitting a background check is a very important step in the process. As you may know the procedure is different in An Tir than it is at the known world level. For this reason it is vital that you follow this procedure for submitting a background check:
IMPORTANT NOTE
Requests for background checks to the Society must come from the Kingdom Seneschal. If you skip the procedures outlined below and send your request directly to the corporate office, your request WILL be returned to the Kingdom Seneschal, who, along with the Background Checks Deputy, contacts your branch seneschal to verify your application. Your background check will be delayed indefinitely until this is done.
If you seek to be a Youth and Family Activities (YAFA) Officer or Mentor, this applies to YOU!
STEP 1 (applies to Americans and Canadians)
Email your Branch Seneschal with the information outlined below in the bulleted list.
STEP 2 (applies to Americans and Canadians)
The Branch Seneschal forwards that request to the An Tir Background Checks Deputy at backgroundchecks@antir.org,
and keeps a copy of the request in their files (keeping a copy of the email is fine - the request does not need to be printed).

The Kingdom Background Checks Deputy will send you an email with instructions. If you can access & print pdf files, the forms to fill out will be attached to the e-mail. If you cannot access & print pdf files, the Kingdom Background Checks Deputy will send you the forms via snail mail.

- Your SCA name
- Your membership number and expiration date
- Your e-mail address
- Your Branch and Kingdom of Residence
- Indicate whether you’re seeking to be a YAFA Officer or Mentor
- Indicate whether or not you can access and print pdf files; if you cannot, then include your snail mail address.

What You Need To Do
- Fill out the forms and send them *directly to the SCA, Inc.* DO NOT send them to the Kingdom Background Checks
Deputy. This is private information that should only be between you and the SCA, Inc.
Write “YAFA Mentor” on the bottom of the form just below the line “Pennsylvania Residents/Volunteers.” - Wait approximately 1 month. During this time the SCA, Inc. will give your information to Intellicorp, the company it has hired to do the actual checking. Intellicorp will reply back to the SCA with a “PASS” “FAIL” or “HOLD”.
- Receive your “PASS” letter from the SCA, Inc.
- Show your “PASS” status letter to your Branch Seneschal and your Branch YAFA or YAC Officer as applicable.

What Happens
The Background Checks Deputy will put your name on a list and forward to the Kingdom Seneschal, who will then forward your information to the corporate office of SCA, Inc. The SCA, Inc. will notify SterlingBackcheck, the company it has hired to do the actual checking, to send you an e-mail to begin the process. SterlingBackcheck will e-mail you an invitation and a link.
What You Need To Do
- Log in to SterlingBackcheck to begin the background check process.
- Wait approximately 1 month.
- Receive your “Clear Status” letter from the SCA, Inc.
- Show your “Clear Status” letter to your Branch Seneschal and (if applicable) your Branch YAFA or YAC Officer.
